Screw Machine Production of Flare Nuts for the Automotive Industry
Madison Tool & Die, Inc. was approached by an automotive industry customer in search of high quality screw machining service. The flare nuts required by this customer are a common request for us; we make many fasteners in medium to high volume range for the auto industry, including four other "brother" fasteners very similar to this (same family). This product offered the particular challenge of needing to be able to withstand a 72-hour salt spray.
After careful analysis, we determined we could meet the customer's needs through application of a zinc chromate plating finish. Our 6 spindle screw machine crafted these 13mm x 17mm hex flare nuts to a tightest tolerance of ±0.0005". We currently ship 30,000 12L14 steel flare nuts per week to this Midwestern customer, for a projected total of 1,560,000 units annually.
