CNC Turning of a Rear End Differential Ring for the Heavy Duty Construction Vehicle Industry

Madison Tool & Die, Inc. was approached by an automotive industry customer requiring our custom CNC turning services. The rear end differential rings requested by this Midwestern customer were to be used in the heavy duty construction vehicle industry. Our analysis determined that the 7.5", 112-tooth rings would require three machining operations, they included CNC turning (turn OD and ID and machine faces) and vertical machining.

We began with 2" thick gray cast iron which we machined on our Mazak CNC Duo Turn turning center and our Haas Vertical machining center, to tolerance of ±0.0005". The finished components then had rust prevention coating applied. We produced these parts with a two-week turnaround time at a cycle time of 6 minutes.
